Rustenburg, including Tlhabane and Phokeng, is a town located in the Bojanala region of the North West Province in South Africa. In the 1800s the Voortrekkers claimed this, the Magaliesberg area, as their homeland. The area soon thrived with crops and livestock and rapidly grew into a peaceful community. Thus, the name of this town was given – Rustenburg meaning “fort of rest”. The Royal Bafokeng comprise a population of about 310 000 people. The Royal Bafokeng are members of the Setswana-speaking indigenous community

Today this town thrives on its agricultural industry which produces beef, citrus, wheat, sunflower and wheat. The Rustenburg area is also a well-known mining area because of its proximity to the Bushveld Igneous Complex.
