Geography and history

Merafong City is a city situated in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region of the North West Province in South Africa. This area is also made up of the following towns – Carletonville, Fochville, Greenspark, Khutsong, Kokosi, Wedela and Welverdiend. The discovery of rich gold reefs in the 1930s led to the formation of this cluster of towns. This are encloses some of the richest gold mines in the world.

Merafong City is located about 65 km from Johannesburg and tourists can visit by using two national roads, namely the N12 and N14. The inclusion of the seven towns makes the population number very high – about 200 000 residents. Fochville is the oldest town in the region, and was declared a town in 1951. Attached to Fochville and Carletonville are the towns of Khutsong, Kokosi, Greenspark, Welverdiend, and Blybank.

The Cradle of Humankind is one of eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa, and the only one in Gauteng. It is widely recognised as the place from which all of humankind originated.

There are many nature inspired activities and attractions in and around Merafong City. The Abe Bailey Nature Reserve will excite every member of the family. There are many species of birds and wildlife to behold, especially waterbirds and zebra.
